Season 2 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” starts streaming on Dec. 5. This premiere date is just two days before the deadline for Golden Globe voters to submit their nominations ballot. This period piece is looking to defend its title as Best Comedy Series at these awards bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. And based on the trailer for the sophomore season, which you can watch above, it looks like it has a good chance at doing just that. And likewise for Rachel Brosnahan as the title character.
As per the official synopsis from Amazon, season 2 of the show promises lots of must-see moments: “After Midge’s triumph at the Gaslight, the fallout from her takedown of Sophie Lennon looms large, making her climb up the comedy ladder more challenging than ever. As the actual grind of being a comic begins to take its toll on Midge, the pressure to come clean to her family weighs on her – especially as her choices have a ripple effect on everyone around her.”
The Globes usually prefer to reward brand-new shows, with only five comedies having won here twice: “Barney Miller” (1975-76), “Fame” (1982-83), “Ally McBeal” (1997-98), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-05) and “Glee” (2009-10). But they all did it in two years running, which bodes well for “Mrs. Maisel.”
Looking to stop “Mrs. Maisel” from repeating is HBO’s new comedy series “Barry.” It is coming off Emmy wins for lead Bill Hader and scene stealer Henry Winkler. Also in the mix are the 2017 champ “Atlanta” and the second seasons of “GLOW” and “The Good Place.”
