Is Best Production Design is shaping up to be a closer contest than we think? “The Shape of Water” is ahead to take home the Oscar with 2/9 odds in our latest predictions, but “Blade Runner 2049” is the pick of a handful of our pundits for an upset.
With 13/2 odds, “Blade Runner 2049” has the support of three Experts — Tim Gray (Variety), Jack Matthews (Gold Derby) and Sara Vilkomerson (Entertainment Weekly) — Editor Rob Licuria and Top 24 Users ARegularGuy and zack. The remaining three, “Dunkirk” (40/1 odds), “Beauty and the Beast” (50/1 odds) and “Darkest Hour” (80/1 odds) have zero votes from our panel.
“The Shape of Water” and “Blade Runner 2049” could not look more different — throwback 1960s Baltimore vs. futuristic sleekness — and both claimed Art Directors Guild Awards in their respective genre categories in January: Best Period Feature Film for the former and Best Fantasy Feature Film for the latter. “The Shape of Water,” however, has also pocketed wins from the Critics’ Choice Awards and BAFTA.
Thirteen-time nominee “The Shape of Water” also benefits from being a Best Picture nominee, which “Blade Runner 2049,” a five-time nominee, is not. If the Denis Villeneuve sequel pulls off the upset, it’d be the fifth non-Best Picture nominee to do so this century after “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005), “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007), “Alice in Wonderland” (2010) and “The Great Gatsby” (2013).
