‘The Voice’ battle round: Night 2 on Tuesday will display more fireworks in pairings [UPDATING LIVE]

For the first round of battles on Monday, “The Voice” producers unveiled a slightly different approach. They allowed the viewers to see more of the behind-the-scenes leading into the actual performances, including the artists finding out their competitors and final moments of dress rehearsals with the coaches. Did you like these new additions to the long-running show for its 14th season on NBC?

Considering this episode was the first two hours of battles, it was astounding that three steals have already been used. They were taken by six-time coaching winner Blake Shelton, three-time champ Adam Levine and rookie coach (and “American Idol” legend) Kelly Clarkson. Each of those coaches has just one steal remaining for this round. Season 12 winning coach Alicia Keys still has two steals in her arsenal. Monday’s episode was also the first opportunity to see the interactions with the four coaches and their battle round advisors: Julia Michaels (Team Adam), Trace Adkins (Team Blake), Shawn Mendes (Team Alicia) and Hailee Steinfeld (Team Kelly).

Live blog below for Tuesday, March 20:

8:05 p.m. – The exciting round of battles continue with Team Kelly’s Amber Sauer competing against Jorge Eduardo. Kelly decided to pair these two up because they are her most passionate contestants. I’m not sure I believe that reasoning, because why would you want to lose one of your most enthusiastic performers? Regardless, let’s see how these two compete! They will be singing their advisor Hailee’s song “Starving.” Jorge asked to change some of the lyrics to Spanish and Amber was game to switch things up.

8:15 p.m. – Let the battle begin! Jorge kicked the song off showing off a consistent falsetto while playing guitar. After the first verse, the paired harmonized nicely before Amber took control. She’s definitely got a powerful voice but I’m not sure I would choose this song for her. It is more in Jorge’s wheelhouse. Amber got a couple of powerful notes in as she strutted around the stage. She had an advantage there, as Jorge was held back with the guitar. I would say this was a pretty even battle! Does Kelly want a powerhouse vocalist or a singer-songwriter heartthrob?

8:20 p.m. – Both Alicia and Adam would choose Jorge, but Blake thinks Amber won that battle. Kelly said pairing them up was her dumbest move by far. She doesn’t feel like she can make the wrong choice, but she decided to take Jorge into the next round! I support her decision; I’m curious to see how he progresses in the competition. Sadly, Amber was sent home.

8:30 p.m. – Up next, Davison and Reid Umstattd are facing off on Team Adam. This is a tough pairing between a soul singer and a rocker. They’ll be singing “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna. During rehearsal, Adam stressed he needs both of their identities to be defined. Julia was impressed with Reid’s ability to flip from full voice to falsetto, but loved Davison’s raw emotion. Reid’s biggest challenge will be appearing as honest as Davison.

8:35 p.m. – Let’s battle! Reid started the song with a powerful, raspy vocal that took me by surprise. Davison quickly countered with some complex runs that threw Kelly back in her seat. Both sound great, but while Davison looks like a potential star, Reid looks less comfortable on stage. The song clearly favors Davison who is pouring his heart into the song. When watching these two, you could believe this was Davison’s song, while Reid looks like an excellent karaoke singer. To me, Davison won this battle hands down.

8:40 p.m. – Blake though the two were split down the middle, but would pick Davison if he had to choose. Kelly loved Davison’s runs, but couldn’t make a clear decision on the winner. Alicia declined to give Adam any advice as well. Adam appreciated Reid’s confidence and Davison’s passion. Adam decided to choose the artist who surprises him every time he sings: Reid. Wow! I am shocked by that decision and completely disagree. Davison was sent home.

8:42 p.m. – Three more battles took place but were not shown in full. On Team Blake Jaron Strom took out Bransen Ireland. On Team Alicia, Johnny Bliss defeated Megan Lee. Lastly, Team Kelly’s Jamella sent home Teana Boston.

8:50 p.m. – Our last battle of the night could be epic! Team Alicia’s Jordyn Simone is taking on Kelsea Johnson. They’re singing “Don’t Let Go” by En Vogue, which should allow them to show off their powerful, energetic voices. Shawn loves Jordyn’s power but was blown away by Kelsea’s voice, saying he needs her album right away. Alicia told them both they need to dial down the volume so they have somewhere to climb by the end of the song. In her words, their performance will either be amazing or a train wreck. Based on the previews, I’m guessing it will be the best battle of the night!

8:55 p.m. – Time to battle! Jordyn started things off and I love the clear tone of her voice. Kelsea’s is rich and raspy, which is also nice. Jordyn’s voice is a better fit for the song, but perhaps I’m just judging it that way because she sounds closer to the original, which is classic. Kelsea, for her part, has a bit more of the “it” factor on stage the coaches may be looking for. I found Kelsea to be the more memorable during auditions, but I actually would choose Jordyn after this battle!

8:58 p.m. – Adam said he would choose Jordyn, but feels Kelsea sings right in Alicia’s wheelhouse. Both Blake and Kelly thought it was an even battle, but would go with Kelsea for her scratchy, textured voice. But what does Alicia think? The winner of this battle is Kelsea!

8:59 p.m. – We’ve got a steal! We’ve got a double steal! Adam and Kelly both pushed their button. Adam argued that he was the only coach who told Jordyn he chose her, even before Alicia made her decision. Kelly stood up and fought for Jordyn, despite saying she would have given the edge to Kelsea earlier. In the end, loyalty counts! Jordyn chose to join Team Adam. That’s a wrap for Night 2 of the battles!
