Monday night on “The Voice,” Rayshun LaMarr and Tish Haynes Keys performed Rufus feat. Chaka Khan‘s “Sweet Thing” for Team Adam Levine during the first battle round episode of Season 14. Both gospel artists gave it their all, but Adam ultimately chose to save Rayshun. However, Kelly Clarkson made the smart move of stealing Tish for her team on the reality TV singing competition. “I believe this song you could argue is more teed up, Tish, for you,” admitted Adam. “It’s Chaka. It’s in your lane. Rayshun, being able to keep up with Tish singing Chaka is next to impossible, so that shows me so much about who you are. I love you both equally. You both should be in this competition and for both of you not to be at this stage would be a crime. The winner of this battle is Rayshun.”
After Adam made his decision, Kelly quickly stole Tish for her team, declaring, “It would be a very poor moment for this show to let someone as talented as you go home. It’s insane!” Kelly teased Adam for cutting such a strong artist, reminding everyone that she also turned her chair for Tish back in the blind auditions.
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty said, “Perhaps because the song is already a duet, but Rayshun and Tish gelled so well in their performance that it felt like a record meant to let two people shine together. They both had their moments in the spotlight, but found time to support and feed off of each other’s talent as well. Not surprisingly they got a standing ovation from the coaches.”
