Tuesday night on “The Voice,” Reid Umstattd and Davison performed Rihanna‘s “Love on the Brain” for Team Adam Levine during the second battle round episode of Season 14. In this battle between the rocker and the soul singer, Adam ultimately chose to save Reid, thereby eliminating Davison from the reality TV singing competition. “Thanks for nothing, y’all,” Adam told his fellow coaches when they had trouble saying who should advance to the next round. “Reid, your incredible confidence and the way you proudly stand there, you can probably make any song seem like your own. Davison, that needs to rub off on you. You better start believing Davison, because it’s time. This really was the right pairing because look, it worked, we did it. I’m just gonna go with the person who I think surprises me every single time they sing. As hard as this is for me to do, the winner of this battle is Reid.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger Denton Davidson remarked, “Reid started the song with a powerful, raspy vocal that took me by surprise. Davison quickly countered with some complex runs that threw Kelly back in her seat. Both sound great, but while Davison looks like a potential star, Reid looks less comfortable on stage. The song clearly favors Davison who is pouring his heart into the song. When watching these two, you could believe this was Davison’s song, while Reid looks like an excellent karaoke singer. To me, Davison won this battle hands down.”
