Monday night on “The Voice,” Sharane Calister and Jamai performed Shawn Mendes‘ “Mercy” for Team Alicia Keys during the first battle round episode of Season 14. Both artists waged war with their song, but Alicia ultimately chose to save Sharane, thereby eliminating Jamai from the reality TV singing competition. “I was, first of all, supremely proud of this battle,” smiled Alicia while staring at her two powerful artists. “Shawn Mendes was our advisor and when he sees this back, I think he’s gonna be blown away. Jamai, you have been the shocker for me. You have grown exponentially. And Sharane, I think you might have 11 lives and you’re only 24.” After a long pause, Alicia declared, “The winner of this battle is Sharane.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty noted, “During choreo rehearsals, Alicia told them to not try to be ‘pretty’ or ‘cool’ and just have fun with the song. In the performance, both Jamai and Sharane showed mastery over both the song and the stage, matching each other beat for beat and run for run.”
