Monday night on NBC, 21-year-old Hannah Goebel sang Alicia Keys‘ “If I Ain’t Got You” during the blind auditions of “The Voice” Season 14. The Nashville, Tennessee resident decided to focus on R&B music instead of going to college, a decision that her family supported. All four coaches — Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Alicia — turned their chairs around for Hannah, but Kelly blocked Alicia so that she couldn’t be in the running. Hannah respected the move and ultimately chose to be on Team Kelly. Can Hannah make it all the way to the Season 14 live shows? Watch “The Voice” blind audition performance video above.
“She’s singing Alicia Keys! I have no chance unless I block her,” Kelly explained as to why she used her one and only block of the season to stop Alicia from acquiring Hannah for her team. “It is a lot about strategy. It is hard to have longevity in this career. I think that I could be a really great coach for you in that sense of having just a fruitful career. Also, I used my only block for the season. I love you! I can’t hide passion, y’all.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty noted, “Smartly Kelly used her block on Alicia, stopping her from having a go at a great singer doing a great rendition of her own song! With Alicia out of the running, Kelly put up a big fight and in the end her block was used correctly because Hannah joined her team.”
