Monday night on NBC, 29-year-old Jamai sang Usher‘s “U Got It Bad” during the blind auditions of “The Voice” Season 14. The Chambersburg, Pennsylvania native started a singing telegram service when he was younger but now he’s trying to enter the big leagues. Two coaches — Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson — turned their chairs around for Jamai, and he ultimately chose to be on Team Alicia. Can Jamai make it all the way to the Season 14 live shows? “I definitely don’t want to take anything from Kelly because I think she’s amazing,” Alicia announced while fighting to get Jamai on her team. “The reason why I wanted to turn around, you have this variety that really is powerful plus you have a style that’s really your own. I’m really excited for you to choose Team Alicia so that we can go on to what I hope is another victory.” Alicia previously won Season 12 with artist Chris Blue.
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty declared, “His audition of Usher‘s ‘U Got It Bad,’ a faithful interpretation of the song, took time to inspire Alicia and Kelly to hit their buttons, but both did eventually. Though Alicia seemed like a lock for Jamai’s choice, he gave Kelly a lot of props as a versatile performer in her own right. Kelly’s advice for Jamai was that he should choose songs that aren’t necessarily in his wheelhouse where he sounds so similar to the original artist.”
