Tuesday night on NBC, 33-year-old Wilkes sang The Wallflowers‘ “One Headlight” during the blind auditions of “The Voice” Season 14. The Waleska, Georgia native came across like a professional singer, he just needs the boost of the reality TV show in order to become a household name. Two coaches — Blake Shelton and Adam Levine — turned their chairs around for Wilkes, and he ultimately chose to be on Team Blake. Can Wilkes make it all the way to the Season 14 live shows? “Your voice is so sneaky,” Blake admitted when he was battling Adam to try to get Wilkes on his team. “The longer the song went on, the more you kept turning the dial, gettin’ it closer and closer to 10. That was the difference-maker, I think. There’s a wide-open lane for someone that sounds like you on my team. I’m a fan. That’s the truth.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger Denton Davidson noted, “[Wilkes] has a husky tone and seems like someone who could stand out this season. Two-thirds of the way through the song, Wilkes took it up a notch to show off his range, earning simultaneous chair turns from Adam and Blake. Ultimately, Wilkes chose to join Team Blake, much to Adam’s dismay.”
