Monday night on “The Voice,” Kaleb Lee and Justin Kilgore represented Team Kelly Clarkson during the first knockout round episode of Season 14. Kaleb sang Zac Brown Band‘s “Free,” while Justin took on Billy Joel‘s “Shameless.” After both country artists performed Kelly chose to save Kaleb for her team, thereby eliminating Justin from the reality TV singing competition. “Kaleb, I was impressed by you in the blinds, and then I was even more impressed by you in the battles,” Kelly told the artist that she stole from rival coach Blake Shelton. “And now, I mean, I looked at Blake and I was like, you’re stupid!” Kelly later added, “I am very excited about Kaleb because he is my country guy that is just a solid singer.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty wrote, “With guitar in hand, Kaleb’s performance was classically country, even down to the rasp in his voice and the soaring heights of the chorus. Perhaps due to his experience with pop music and surely because of nerves, Justin’s rendition felt less natural and his vocal delivery suffered in moments.”
Former “The Voice” winner Cassadee Pope was on hand to mentor the artists on Team Kelly, while other champs helped out the rest of the coaches. (See the full list of “The Voice” past winners.) Blind auditions and battle rounds aired for the first 10 episodes of “The Voice” Season 14, with the knockout rounds taking pace during the first weeks of April 2018. “The Voice” has won the Emmy for Best Reality-Competition Program for four of the past five years (2013, 2015-17).
