During Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” Jennifer Hudson paired up MaKenzie Thomas and Mike Parker in the third knockout round of Season 15. MaKenzie sang Bee Gees‘s “How Deep Is Your Love” while Mike took on The Script‘s “Breakeven.” Even though the young artists were performing for a slot on Jennifer’s team, rival coach Kelly Clarkson got so into MaKenzie’s performance that she ended up with a leg cramp. “Miss Thing, I legit got a leg cramp,” Kelly declared after MaKenzie’s acoustic cover of “How Deep Is Your Love.” “I was like, oh my God, I don’t know what to do! Why are you hurting me, MaKenzie?! I turned around, I didn’t know where to go. The one riff went to the Lord, said hello, came back down, gave me a leg cramp. If I had to choose, I’d definitely go with leg cramp girl, MaKenzie.”
When it was finally Jennifer’s turn to give her critique, she told MaKenzie that she’s a “skilled singer.” Conversely, she told Mike that he’s a “smart singer.” “Both of you have a future,” JHud added. Perhaps because of Kelly’s passionate words, Jennifer decided to keep MaKenzie on her team, later explaining, “She made Mariah Carey cry and I just want to continue to see what more she has in store.”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the knockout: “In their knockout, Mike left the nerves at home and managed to give a confident and fully-realized performance, but at the end of the day he was utterly out sung by MaKenzie who honestly gave an unexpectedly delicate performance that proved you don’t always need huge notes in order to knock it out of the park.”
