There was a lot of pressure on R&B singer Tinashe and her pro partner Brandon Armstrong on premiere night of “Dancing with the Stars” season 27. For her, expectations were high since she has more prior dance experience than any other celebrity contestant. And for Armstrong it was his first ever performance as a professional dancer on the show, and being paired with such a trained star it was his responsibility to showcase her skills with his choreography. So how did they do? Pretty darn well, though the judges quibbled over how successfully Armstrong showed off his partner. Watch their outstanding jive above, and read the judges’ comments below.
Len Goodman: “I’ll tell you what it had: plenty of snap, crackle and pop. You really came out and gave it plenty. You’re right on my leg level — a little bit flexed on occasion, you could do with just a little bit of a straightening. But the performance was top-notch.”
Bruno Tonioli: “That was a foxy jive! Brandon, such a good job. That was so fast, so dynamic and yet clean, precise, and you managed to show your partner’s personality … And it worked.”
Carrie Ann Inaba: “[Tinashe,] you are a star. There is something spectacular about you when you dance. I’m going to tell you Brandon because it’s your first time, you were fantastic, and you did great choreography, but I’d like to see her shine a little more. There was so much choreography that I didn’t get to see you. I disagree with Bruno. I would have liked to see more moments … I think she’s fantastic.”
Despite those mildly mixed reviews about the choreography, Tinashe’s performance was good enough to score 8s from Inaba and Tonioli and a 7 from Goodman, giving her a total of 23 out of 30. That tied her with football player DeMarcus Ware as the highest scoring contestant of the night. Did you agree with those totals?
