I’d blame the electoral college, but this time it was the popular vote that was the problem. On “Dancing with the Stars” for Trios Night, R&B singer Tinashe and her pro partner Brandon Armstrong were joined by season 18 runner-up Amy Purdy for a tango (watch it above). As usual for Tinashe it was one of the highest scoring routines of the night. In fact, Tinashe had never finished lower than second place on the judges’ leaderboard. That’s what made it so shocking when she was eliminated at the end of the night in 10th place.
It all came down to her fan base, or the lack thereof. The recording artist has a few hits under her belt, but she wasn’t a household name before the season started. She was paired with Brandon Armstrong, a first-time pro dancer who hasn’t yet established a fan base of his own. And Tinashe’s consistently high scores meant that the fans she did have may have gotten complacent, not voting — or voting for someone else — because they thought she had a comfortable buffer in the judges’ scores. Maybe that’s why she was announced as in jeopardy on Most Memorable Year Night: perhaps producers knew she was lagging behind in audience votes and were trying to scare her fan base into supporting her.
Well, if that was the case, it didn’t work. The “DWTS” season 27 bloodbath continues for the female celebs, who have been dropping like flies. Nikki Glaser, Danelle Umstead, Nancy McKeon and now Tinashe have gotten the boot, leaving Evanna Lynch, Alexis Ren and Mary Lou Retton as the last remaining representatives of the fairer sex. Meanwhile, the four lowest scoring contestants on Trios Night were all men — and all safe.
