“I’m here today as my real self. I’m ready to be Brody,” declared transgender singer Brody Ray before taking the stage during the Tuesday, June 26 episode of “America’s Got Talent.” Born a female, Brody began his transition in 2010, where he now feels that he’s overcome many of the struggles in his life. For his “AGT” audition Brody gave an emotional performance of Jordan Smith‘s “Stand In The Light,” bringing judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel to tears. Watch the “Americas Got Talent” audition above and read the judges’ comments below.
Howie: “How does that feel? I can tell you’re emotional. It’s a really amazing story and it’s inspirational and I think you’re a great singer and I think you perform with all your heart. And you’re actually, right now, you’re standing in the light.”
Mel B: “I think your soul comes out when you sing because I can actually feel and hear your passion. And your voice is great. I like you a lot.”
Heidi: “I think you are absolutely incredible. I love the tone of your voice. I was also looking around into the audience. Everyone was on their feet. You’re gonna go very, very far, I think.”
Simon: “You’ve got an amazing voice. I really like you. You’re a great guy. I think you are inspirational. So I think for you, it’s really important, you’ve gotta start singing your own material because I actually think you could be a force to be reckoned with.”
In his “AGT” recap, our live-blogger John Benutty noted, “Prior to performing he shared his trans experience and explained how singing helped save him. The looks on the judges’ faces as Brody performed said all you need to know — Mel was on the verge of tears, Heidi was wide-eyed, Howie was deeply pensive and Simon was nodding his head in approval. At the close of the song, a standing ovation from the entire room triggered an emotional response from Brody and paved the way for a round of compliments from the judges and, of course, four YESES.”
