At last year’s Emmys Netflix scored two big wins for anthology series “Black Mirror” thanks to the “San Junipero” installment: Best TV Movie and Best Writing for Charlie Brooker. The streaming network could be in for a similar haul this year, this time for the fan-favorite outing “USS Callister.” Eleven of Gold Derby’s 16 Emmy Experts predict that “USS Callister (Black Mirror),” its official title on the Emmy ballot, will win Best TV Movie, resulting in leading 15/8 odds. Will any of the program’s Emmy-eligible performers — Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson or Michaela Coel — go along for the ride? Let’s take a closer look.
Best Movie/Limited Series Actor: Jesse Plemons as Robert Daly
Plemons is no stranger to the Emmys, earning a bid for “Fargo” (2016) and being a part of nominated series like “Breaking Bad” and “Friday Night Lights.” A nom for “USS Callister” would be his first leading nomination after so many memorable featured roles. In Plemons’ favor is the fact that Daly, a computer programmer who creates his own “Star Trek”-type world, is a complicated character that straddles the line between villain and lunatic. Emmy voters are suckers for such roles, and one of our Experts — Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes) — predicts that Plemons will be rewarded with a nomination.
Best Movie/Limited Series Actress: Cristin Milioti as Nanette Cole
Milioti, a Critics’ Choice nominee for “Fargo” (2016), rose to fame after being cast as the titular mom in “How I Met Your Mother.” In “Black Mirror” she plays the show’s unlikely heroine Cole, a tech savvy new employee at a video game company. One day Cole wakes up inside of Daly’s virtual world as a digital clone, along with copies of many of Daly’s co-workers. While the others have accepted their fates, Cole makes it her mission to find a way back to the real world. Three Emmy Experts predict that Milioti will be nominated: Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Chris Harnick (E).
Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor: Jimmi Simpson as James Walton
Fans of “House of Cards” and “Westworld” are used to seeing Simpson in complex roles, and “USS Callister” is no exception. He’s coming off a 2018 BAFTA TV nomination for playing Walton, the co-founder of the company where Daly and Cole work. At the office Walton treats Daly like an afterthought, while on the USS Callister he’s subservient to Captain Daly.
Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress: Michaela Coel as Shania Lowry
This 2016 BAFTA TV winner for “Chewing Gum” (2015) takes on the role of Lowry in “Black Mirror.” In real life she’s simply another one of the office coworkers who warns Cole to keep her distance from Daly. Aboard the spaceship Emmy voters may recall that, midway through the episode, Lowry gets transformed into a space creature when she defies Captain Daly.
