Voices of Hope children’s choir made their triumphant return to “America’s Got Talent” during the Semifinals 1 episode and while they earned praises from most of the judges, Mel B gave them a jeer. “At the start of the song the timing was a little bit off,” Mel said before being told by the choir conductor that the Dolby Theatre was simply too noisy at first for the kids to hear themselves singing. Do you think Voices of Hope’s performance of “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked” will earn them a spot in the “AGT” Finals? SEE ‘America’s Got Talent’ predictions: 5 acts advancing from Semifinal 1 will be Duo Transcend, Michael Ketterer, Shin Lim, Voices of Hope, ZurcarohHowie Mandel: “You know, in this time that we live in now, we look for these moments that are so uplifting and aspirational. And that’s what the sound and the look and who you people are. You just make us feel good and I think this room will agree with me and America will agree with me. I just feel good!”
Heidi Klum: “I thought it was wicked — literally. I’m not a comedian, sorry, but I had to. No, I mean, you put so much joy onto the stage. You’re like my happy place. I think you’ve everyone’s happy place. Thank you for that. Well done.”
Mel B: “Now, I have to say, I do feel like at the start of the song the timing was a little bit off. You made it up in the middle. No, I’m just giving constructive criticism. But you do bring joy and you do make me feel all warm and fuzzy. I liked it.”
Simon Cowell: “It doesn’t matter. None of this matters. What matters is who you are, what we just heard. This is exactly the kind of act I love seeing do well on ‘America’s Got Talent.’ Genuinely. Actually you are so far my favorite act of the night. America, please put these guys, these girls into the Finals. I’ve loved every performance from you. I love you. These guys are amazing. Absolutely amazing.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Next was the Voices of Hope children’s choir with their rendition of ‘Defying Gravity.’ Once again the performance featured a handful of solo moments from their choir leads with the larger choir handling backup vocals and the choruses. The thing about the choir that Howie loved is that they are uplifting in both their song choices and production and he thinks it is what we need in the world right now. The one bit of criticism came from Mel who thought some of the timing was off during the song, but the other judges disagreed with her (I actually agreed!). That being said, Simon doesn’t think it matters because their choir is the type of act he likes to see succeed.”
