‘World of Dance’ Emmys exclusive: Showrunners Kris Curry & Matilda Zoltowski on dancers and ‘phenomenal’ Jennifer Lopez

In an exclusive video shown for the first time on Gold Derby, “World of Dance” executive producer and superstar judge Jennifer Lopez introduces the fearless showrunners who execute the reality TV program on a daily basis. Watch the video above to see executive producers Kris Curry and Matilda Zoltowski explain the passion and dedication it takes to create a series of this magnitude.

“It was a conscious decision on our part as producers to try and understand the dancers as characters and understand a story arc for them over the course of the whole season,” says Curry. Showing how the artists were able to grow from their first performance in the qualifier to their last performance in the world final was key.

“We’ve got these amazing dancers and they’ve all got different styles,” adds Zoltowski. “We worked out a way that they can all compete against each other. You can have a 16-year old ballerina compete against a 15-man hip-hop group. Once we managed to figure that out we let them do what they do.”

Behind the scenes, producers work directly with the dancers to enhance their own vision of themselves as artists. “We arm them with the best stage. We say to them ‘just do the best version of you.’ And we try to create a working environment where they feel like they get to do their best work,” says Curry. “That, in turn, attracted people who may not normally agree to do a show like this.”

Teaming up with one of the world’s biggest stars has proven to be a fulfilling experience for both. “Working with Jennifer Lopez is phenomenal because her expectations and her desire to do her best work has driven everybody in every department to deliver,” says Curry. Zoltowski adds, “You have no choice but to do your very best and not stop until you’ve got it.”
