The Rock Company gave one of the best performances so far on “World of Dance” season two. At least, that’s what the judges thought. They performed at the end of “The Qualifiers 6,” and they needed an average score of 80 or above from the judges to advance to the next round, the single-elimination “Duels.” Suffice it to say they achieved that total and then some, and when we polled our readers about the latest round of performances, it was a landslide: The Rock Company were by far the class of the field. Scroll down for the complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
On a night when no other contestants scored over 90 The Rock Company received 97 from Ne-Yo, 97 from Jennifer Lopez, and 96 from Derek Hough for a remarkable average of 96.7. That was the best score of the night by almost 10 points — the next best were The Untouchables with 88.7. It was also the highest score yet for a dance act in the Junior Team Division.
So what made their performance so special? Apart from the fact that they delivered an emotionally mature and technically impressive routine while all under the age of 18, they also had an especially personal connection to the dance. Performed to Emeli Sande‘s version of John Lennon‘s “Imagine,” the routine was inspired by their home, Las Vegas, which was the setting of a horrific mass shooting last fall that claimed 58 lives. Even more striking, the judges were deeply moved even before they heard the story behind it.
The Rock Company were the best performance of the night according to a whopping 51% of our poll respondents, followed by the sexy contemporary routine by Ashley and Zack with 13% of the vote, and then the spirited Canadian hip-hop dance troupe Brotherhood with 12%.
