XXXTentacion has skyrocketed to number-one on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, but under the worst of circumstances. His song “Sad!” climbs from number-52 all the way to the top spot following the rapper’s murder on June 18. This is the first posthumous chart-topper since Notorious B.I.G. reached the summit in 1997 with “Mo Money Mo Problems.” XXXTentacion was only 20-years-old.
“Sad!” had previously peaked at number-seven back on March 31 following the release of XXXTentacion’s second studio album, “?,” which debuted on top of the Billboard 200 albums chart that week. But even then he was mired in controversy and legal problems. In 2016 he was arrested for robbery and assault, and then later that year he was arrested for battering a pregnant woman in a case of domestic abuse.
But on June 18 XXXTentacion was shot to death in an apparent armed robbery after leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield, Florida. A suspect, Dedrick Williams, was arrested for the murder on June 20.
XXXTentacion’s tragic ascent to number-one knocks down Drake‘s “Nice for What” from number-one after that song had spent seven nonconsecutive weeks in the top spot. Drake actually dropped to third place on this week’s chart as Cardi B climbs one spot to number-two for “I Like It” featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin. If she eventually climbs to number-one it will be her first chart-topper since her breakthrough hit “Bodak Yellow” last fall.
Juice WRLD climbs two spots to number-four with “Lucid Dreams,” which is now the hip-hop artist’s first top-five hit. And rounding out the top five, Maroon 5 and Cardi B’s collaboration “Girls Like You” holds steady in fifth place. Watch the video above to see what other songs made this week’s top 10.
