“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” had a perfect track record at the Annie Awards on Saturday (Feb. 2) winning all seven of its races including Best Studio Animated Feature. With that sweep, its main Oscar rival for that award, ‘Incredibles 2,” was limited to two wins from 11 bids. Another Academy Awards nominee, “Mirai,” won the Best Independent Animated Feature award here. Of the other Oscar nominees for Best Animated Feature, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” went 1 for 10 while “Isle of Dogs” was 1 for 4. (See the full list of 2019 Annie Awards winners.)
The Annie Awards, which are presented by the Hollywood chapter of the International Animated Film Assn., don’t always agree with the motion picture academy. Only six of the last 10 Annie champs have lined up with Oscar: “Up” (2010), “Rango” (2012), “Frozen” (2014), “Inside Out” (2016), “Zootopia” (2017) and “Coco.” In 2015, the Annies named “How to Train Your Dragon 2” as Best Animated Feature, but the Oscar went to “Big Hero 6” instead.
The Annies also honor achievements in television. Best Animated TV Production (General Audience) is roughly equivalent to the Emmy for Best Animated Program. This year that Annie went to “Bojack Horseman” over “Big Mouth,” “Bob’s Burgers,”Human Kind Of” and “The Venture Bros.”
