Boosted by the awards juggernaut that is “Game of Thrones,” HBO was able to regain its place at the top of the list of overall Emmy nominations. Numbering among its leading 137 bids are a record 32 for the final season of the fantasy series. Last year, Netflix had broken HBO’s 17-year reign at the top of the charts when it earned 112 nomination to the paycaster’s 108; this year, the streaming service had to settle for second place with 117 nominations.
Four years ago, programming on Netflix merited a mere 34 Emmy Awards nominations. In 2016, it was up to 56 bids and then numbered 91 nominations in 2017. Among the big four traditional broadcast networks, NBC leads again buoyed by the success of “This Is Us.” ABC, CBS and FOX are well behind the peacock network.
