2019 Oscars calendar: WGA Awards on Feb. 17, final Academy Awards voting ends Feb. 19

Before final voting for the Oscars began on February 12, we had heard from 8 of the 13 guilds (actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, directors, film editors, producers and visual effects wizards). Four more — makeup artists & hair stylists, sound editors, sound mixers and writers — hand out their awards this weekend, in advance of the Feb. 19 deadline for academy members to cast their ballots for the 91st annual Academy Awards. The costume designers weigh in with their picks hours after that voting ends.

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday, two of the three Oscar nominees for Best Makeup & Hairstyling — “Mary Queen of Scots” and “Vice” — are up for a pair of prizes each. The third nominee, the Swedish film “Border,” was snubbed by the guild.

At Sunday’s Motion Picture Sound Editor Awards, the Oscar frontrunner for Best Sound Editing, “First Man,” contends in three categories as do two of its rivals for this Academy Award (“A Quiet Place” and “Roma”). The other two Oscar nominees — “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” — have two MPSE bids each.

At the Writers Guild Awards on Sunday, don’t look for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar frontrunner “The Favourite” to number among the winners. It was not eligible for consideration by the guild. Indeed only seven of the WGA Awards nominees in the original and adapted screenplay races are in the running here.
