There are going to be a few extra Tony nominations to go around this year, as several categories will be expanding their number of nominees.
Last season, the Tony Administration Committee released a decision in the final round of eligibility rulings that affected the number of nominees in each category. According to this determination, in any of the 26 competitive Tony categories where there are at least nine eligible contenders, there shall be five nominees.
Last year, this change affected all eight design categories and helped increase Best Play and Best Revival of a Play. However, there was some speculation as to whether or not this decision would extend past the 2017-2018 Broadway season.
Gold Derby can now confirm that this rule change is permanent and therefore applies to this season. Once again, this means that all the design categories will feature five nominees. Additionally, the highly coveted Best Musical and Best Play categories are once again expanded from four to five nominees thanks to a robust season of original work.
Best Book of a Musical will also see a fifth contender in its ranks. Best Score should follow suit, providing at least one of the musical scores from this year’s plays is deemed eligible for the category by the administration. There are eight original scores from musicals in contention, so the addition of at least one play will bring us to the required nine contenders to yield five nominees. Philip Glass’ work on the revival of “King Lear” is almost certain to make the cut. His musicians are on stage, after all! Other composers that could find themselves eligible for their work on this season’s plays include Danny Elfman (“Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus”) and the team of Jason Michael Webb & Fitz Patton (“Choir Boy”).
