“We’re kidding ourselves if we think that people have stopped talking,” says Nicole Kidman‘s Celeste Wright in the official teaser trailer for the second season of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” that kicks off on June 9. Let’s hope they are after the original 2017 miniseries earned 16 Emmy nominations and won eight, including Outstanding Limited Series and acting honors for Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard as her now-deceased abusive husband and Laura Dern as the uptight Renata Klein.
The residents of this privileged Northern California coastal enclave still harbor suspicions about what exactly happened at a school fundraiser during which Skarsgard’s malevolent Perry was killed after being pushed down a flight of stairs.
The secret of what exactly occurred is still not known by the authorities. Meanwhile, the female quartet that also includes Reese Witherspoon‘s pushy Madeline Martha Mackenzie, Shailene Woodley as young single mom Jane Chapman and Zoey Kravitz as Bonnie Carlson, who is married to Madeline’s ex-husband, have been dubbed by the locals as the “Monterey Five” As Jane notes, “Like we all have scarlet letters on our backs.”
Most exciting is the addition of Meryl Streep as Mary Louise Wright, Perry’s mother, who is heard saying, “I want to know what happened that night. I ‘m very tempted to ask you but I, I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?” Also new is Crystal Fox and Martin Donovan as Bonnie’s parents.
