During Night 6 of “The Voice” blind auditions, coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Adam Levine met Celia Babini, the final artist to receive a four-chair turn on Season 16 of the reality TV show. This 17-year-old New York City resident gave a haunting rendition of Billie Eilish‘s “idontwannabeyouanymore,” which Kelly said was her favorite new song. The coaches compared Celia’s unique voice to people like Fiona Apple and Florence And The Machine, but she ultimately let three of them down by choosing to join Team Adam. “It is my dream for you to win ‘The Voice,'” Adam had told Celia after her performance was over. “It’s just time for somebody to be a different type of winner for this show. And you know John mentioned Fiona Apple. We’re missing a Fiona Apple right now. There’s a certain kind of intensity and a certain kind of raw power that singing can have. You embody all of that, from the way you perform, the way you sing, what you sing, how you sing it, the choices that you make.”
Three of Adam’s former artist have won “The Voice” over the years — soul singer Javier Colon (Season 1) and pop stars Tessanne Chin (Season 5) and Jordan Smith (Season 9) — so might Celia be his first alternative artist? “You are the future, as far as I’m concerned,” Adam concluded, which no doubt helped sway Celia’s decision.
As for the other coaches’ pitches, John raved that Celia was “like nobody else” in the competition, Blake remarked that her performance was “literally captivating,” and Kelly praised her song choice, saying that she was hoping to use “idontwannabeyouanymore” for one of her own artists this season. “It’s off the list now,” Kelly joked.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about Celia’s performance: “After just one line of the song all three veteran coaches had hit their button for Celia, but her deep haunting vocal took a bit to settle in with John who eventually turned around, too. The four-chair turn kicked off the final night on an extremely high note, including a standing ovation from the panel. Both John and Adam compared her to Fiona Apple, and Adam added that the show and music in general need a winner like Celia. That might have clinched it for him because she joined his team, so we’ll have to see if he’s the coach that can take her to the finals and win!”
