For the first time ever, FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story” has been submitted on the Emmy ballot as a drama and not as a limited series. That’s because of a recent Emmy rule stating that since this particular installment, “AHS: Apocalypse,” featured continuing storylines and characters from both “AHS: Coven” and “AHS: Murder House,” then it couldn’t compete as a limited series. The cable network is now hoping that the Emmy switcheroo will pay off for 19 of its performers, as that’s the number of actors and actresses that have been submitted on the 2019 ballot.
Among the large ensemble are two lead performers: Cody Fern as antichrist Michael Langdon and Sarah Paulson as “Apocalypse” survivor Ms. Wilhemina Venable, “Coven” supreme witch Cordelia Foxx and “Murder House” psychic Billie Dean Howard. That’s right — Paulson is eligible this year for playing all three of those spooky roles. This “People v. O.J. Simpson” Emmy winner previously scored five bids for various versions of “American Horror Story,” while Fern is a newcomer to the franchise.
As for the sprawling supporting cast, many names stick out including those who’ve previously been nominated for the program: Frances Conroy, Adina Porter and Kathy Bates, who won for “Coven.” There’s also series stalwart Evan Peters, who like Paulson is up for playing no less than three characters: survivor Mr. Gallant, ghost Tate Langdon and scientist Jeff Pfister.
Since this season is considered a drama series, that means it’s eligible in the guest categories for the first time ever, so watch out for former “Murder House” favorites Jessica Lange, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott. And look at that — Stevie Nicks also appears in the guest actress Emmy category for playing a witchy version of herself.
