The Season 17 premiere of “American Idol” aired Sunday, March 3 on ABC and introduced the country to several aspiring singers who hope to follow in the footsteps of former winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. But one thing that overshadowed the competition was when “American Idol” judge Katy Perry revealed the origin story of how she met boyfriend Orlando Bloom. In case you missed it, the meet-cute involved the Golden Globes, In-N-Out Burger and petty theft.
When Idaho contestant Johanna Jones informed judges Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan that her daily job was cooking burgers at the fast food chain, Perry interjected, “Can I tell you one thing that’s kind of sweet? I met my boyfriend over at In-N-Out. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren’t together. I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend’s hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it. I’m like, ‘Hey that’s my burger!’”
Bryan chimed in, “And you were like, ‘Oh, you’re on the other end of that hand,'” to which Perry happily replied, “Yeah, I did.” After initially meeting at In-N-Out Burger following the 2016 Golden Globes, the couple dated for a few years and are now reportedly engaged.
As for Jones, she made a confession of her own before her audition. “This is a unique thing, but I eat potato chips,” she told the judges when Bryan asked what she does to prepare for singing. That’s when Perry demanded to know if Jones was her “spirit animal” because she’d literally just eaten a bag of potato chips. Perry initiated a potato chip-eating race between Jones and Bryan, who both stuffed their faces with Lay’s as fast as they could.
Bryan won the impromptu challenge, and then Perry shoved the entire bag of chips in her mouth and pretended to choke on the crumbs. After Jones’ performance of Sam Smith‘s “I’m Not the Only One,” she easily sailed through to Hollywood. Perry told her to quit her In-N-Out job, Richie called her “mesmerizing,” and Bryan said that she was about to have a “big time” opportunity.
