“I really don’t want to mess up tonight because eliminations are on the line,” declared “American Idol” heartthrob Logan Johnson prior to his duet of “What a Time” with Julia Michaels during Monday’s Top 20 episode (watch above). “Singing with Julia, I don’t want to embarrass her. I just don’t want to go home. I don’t want to mess this up,” Logan expressed. Unfortunately, judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan put through seven other artists and so this 20-year-old from Boise, Idaho was eliminated.
“You passed the test because the first rule of doing a duet is listening,” Lionel told Logan during his critique. “You had an intricate song. That was very hard to do. A lot of people think you have to think about your note. It’s not. You have to listen to both of you singing at the same time. You did a great job at listening. I saw you paying very close attention to what she was singing. If that’s your first duet, my friend you did a great, great job.”
Katy remarked that she was “hanging on every word of that song.” She added, “It was so beautiful to watch. I got lost in the moment. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s just like a star on the stage.’ So I think that’s a good sign.”
Finally, Luke stated, “Logan, always take every opportunity you can for your vocals to really, really push through. You have kind of that high-end tenor. Just push a little more for me so we can really hang on to every note. But the whole vibe of the song was really, really solid. Great job, bud.”
In his “American Idol” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about Logan’s performance: “Julia begins the performance with Logan smiling and giving her a smoldering look. When Logan finally takes control in the second verse you can hear the girls in the audience go crazy for the heartthrob. I couldn’t be more bored by everything about this kid. Sorry. He looks petrified and he’s not impressing me with anything vocally. Next!”
