‘American Idol’ Top 5 power rankings: Madison VanDenburg and Alejandro Aranda topple Laine Hardy

The top five contestants for Season 17 of “American Idol” have been revealed and will sing for America’s vote once again on Sunday, May 12. Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie used their only save to keep Laci Kaye Booth in the competition, eliminating Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon. Gold Derby will continue our weekly power rankings to show which artist is on top and who is in danger of heading home during their quest for the title. Don’t agree with our assessment? Sound off in the comments and head over to our prediction center to influence our racetrack odds for who will be crowned the Season 17 champ. Below is our Top 5 power rankings.

1. Madison VanDenburg
(Top 40: “Who’s Lovin’ You”; Top 20 Solo: “Domino”; Top 20 Duet: “We Belong” with Pat Benatar; Top 14: “Fallin'”; Top 14 Results: “You & I”; Top 10: “How Far I’ll Go”; Top 8: “The Show Must Go On,” “A Million Dreams” with Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon; Top 6: “Piece of My Heart,” “I Surrender”)

With two standout performances this week, Madison rockets to our number one spot in the Power Rankings for the first time. Madison finally broke out of her shell and her stage presence lived up to her powerful vocals during her rockin’ performance of “Piece of My Heart” and soulful ballad, “I Surrender.” Madison has been a bit of an underdog all season, but she’s peaking at just the right time. She’s in it to win it!

2. Alejandro Aranda
(Top 40: “Yellow”; Top 20 Solo: “I Fall Apart”; Top 20 Duet: “There Will Be a Light” with Ben Harper; Top 14: “One Dance”; Top 14 Results: “Cholo Love”; Top 10: “Remember Me”; Top 8: “Under Pressure,” “Mrs. Robinson” with Walker Burroughs; Top 6: “White Rabbit,” “Poison”)

Alejandro finally delivered the performance fans have been waiting for when he stunned the audience with his original song, “Poison.” His guitar skills were on full display and there’s really nothing like Alejandro in his element. His cover of “White Rabbit” was less inspirational, but he still managed to captivate the crowd. Alejandro is back and we couldn’t be happier!

3. Laine Hardy
(Top 40: “Come Together”; Top 20 Solo: “Bring It On Home”; Top 20 Duet: “The Weight” with Elle King; Top 14: “That’s All Right”; Top 14 Results: “Hurricane”; Top 10: “Oo-De-Lally”; Top 8: “Fat Bottomed Girls,” “Jackson” with Laci Kaye Booth; Top 6: “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” “Johnny B. Goode”)

Laine had yet another solid week, but he falls to number three this week for the simple fact that we’ve seen practically the same thing from since the live shows began. The slicked back hair and old-school rock vibe is fun and memorable, but some versatility would be nice. Still, let’s face it, Laine has nothing to worry about.

4. Wade Cota
(Top 40: “Work Song”; Top 20 Solo: “All I Want”; Top 20 Duet: “Broken” with Lovely The Band; Top 14: “Trouble”; Top 14 Results: “Simple Man”; Top 10: “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”; Top 8: “We Are the Champions,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” with Alyssa Raghu; Top 6: “With a Little Help From My Friends,” “Through the Valley”)

Wade just keeps on scraping by despite a lack of stage presence and inconsistent performances. His song choices “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Through the Valley” were smart and effective, earning him a place in the Top 5. Clearly viewers are responding to Wade more than we may be giving him credit for!

5. Laci Kaye Booth
(Top 40: “Georgia on My Mind”; Top 20 Solo: “I Want You to Want Me”; Top 20 Duet: “Mercy” with Brett Young; Top 14: “I Miss You”; Top 14 Results: “As Long as You Follow”; Top 10: “I See the Light”; Top 8: “Love of My Life,” “Jackson” with Laine Hardy; Top 6: “To Love Somebody,” “Open Arms”)

Laci falls to the bottom of our Power Rankings by default, considering she was voted off and saved by the judges following her Top 6 performances. She’s been inconsistent vocally and clearly struggled to win over viewers as much as the others remaining. The backlash she undeservedly received for being saved over Jeremiah won’t help her.
