The first wave of contestants in the Top 14 were revealed at the end of the April 7 episode of this revival on ABC hosted Ryan Seacrest. In episodes taped weeks ago, the remaining score of artists from the Top 40 were divided into two groups. Each one of these two dozen hopefuls had to perform both solo and in duets with celebrities in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. That trio of talent then determined if each contestant deserved a place in the Top 14.

The Group 1 duets aired on April 9. The six women in contention in Group 1 were Kate Barnette, Laci Booth, Cristina Contreras, Ashley Hess, Riley Thompson and Madison VanDenburg. The four men in the running were: Walker Burroughs, Laine Hardy, Uché Ndubizu and Shawn Robinson.
