“American Idol” returns for its second season on ABC beginning March 3. This edition, which is the 17th overall, follows the same basic format as the 15 seasons that ruled the ratings on FOX. Ryan Seacrest is back as host and the three judges remain pop princess Katy Perry, country superstar Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie.
Over the course of the five pre-taped audition episodes that air over the next three weeks, we’ll see upwards of 150 contestants get tickets to Hollywood. These hopefuls were then winnowed down to just 40 in three rounds as they sung in lines of 10, groups, and solos. The Hollywood Week episodes, which were filmed months ago, will air on March 24 and 25.
The Top 40 were then sent to the Aulani Resort in Hawaii which, like ABC, is owned by Disney, to sing again for the three judges.The episode that showcases the Top 40 performances, which was taped in late January, will air on March 31. Only nine of the women in contention made it to the Top 20 overall while just six of them number among the 14 artists who will sing for America’s votes on the first live show on April 14.
