“The clear front-runner this season is Alejandro Aranda,” says Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson, who joins senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Susan Wloszczyna to discuss the recently revealed Top 14 on Season 17 of “American Idol.” “He’s been the most buzzed about online and his performances are just on a totally different level than anyone else at this point,” Davidson continues. Watch our video recap above as we discuss the competition thus far, which artists can win and who we think will be the next singers to go home.
“Laine Hardy is quite a threat,” says Wloszcyna when asked who is in it to win it. “He also has the ‘comeback kid‘ story,” adds Dixon. “We’ve seen people try out one year and get eliminated, and then they come back. Caleb Johnson and Candice Glover came back and won.”
Everyone agrees that being a front-runner at this stage of the competition does not mean it’s smooth sailing to the winner’s circle. Just last year, Maddie Poppe was practically an afterthought at this point but rallied to defeat Gabby Barrett and Caleb Lee Hutchinson in the finale. “I think this year’s Maddie could be Madison VandenBurg,” says Dixon. Wloszczyna agrees adding, “She’s a teenager and she’s very sophisticated in her approach.” But Davidson argues another singer should be on everyone’s radar. “Laci Kaye Booth nails it every time. She’s got her own unique voice and she’s the one people will slowly come to appreciate.”
Four artists will be cut following their first live performance, but who do we feel is the most likely to go home first? Wloszczyna holds nothing back proclaiming, “Uche! And Eddie Island, I don’t know,” she continues. “I finally noticed this whole ‘Mayor of Nashville’ thing. Is he delusional? I don’t get it! How is that helping?” Another artist Wloszczyna has on the bubble is teenager Riley Thompson. “I just think she’s too young. She’s a little unseasoned.”
Davidson agrees that Uche and Island are in trouble, but adds a different take on who could be packing their bags alongside them. “Alyssa Raghu doesn’t stand out enough,” Davidson states, “And I think maybe Evelyn Cormier just because we haven’t seen as much of her.” Dixon then shocks the others saying, “I don’t know about Dimitrius Graham. I think it might be his time to go home,” instigating a mortified, “Why?!” from Wloszczyna. Watch the full video above to hear our full take on each of the Top 14 contestants.
