Early in her career Carmen Carter was told that she was “too fat” to be a star, but now that she’s earned four “yes” votes from the “America’s Got Talent” judges, this viral sensation is having the last laugh. “You shouldn’t be discriminated against because of your sexual preference, your size, your color, your weight, none of that,” Carmen stated in her NBC interview (watch above). “We should take each other at face value. Everyone deserves a chance to show what they have and not feel like they’re not good enough to be a star, because I believe everybody is. If you have a talent, you should be able to go for it.”
During Tuesday night’s audition, this background singer stood front and center and belted out a cover of INXS‘s “Never Tear Us Apart,” blowing away judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union in the process. Simon even proclaimed, “You didn’t come out here as a victim. You came out here to prove a point. And 4,000 people gave you a standing ovation. I think you have an amazing voice — amazing. I love you.”
On the stage Carmen didn’t get to respond to Simon’s kind words, but she addressed him directly backstage in her interview. “Simon, I just love you, I always have,” she revealed. “I think you’re an awesome man. I respect your power. I respect how you carry yourself. I’m kind of a person with tough love. I kind of feel like you are too, so I relate to that. My children will tell you, I am the tough love mom, but I am very tight with my family.”
Carmen continued on, “I’d like to thank you for what you said to America, because it resonates when you speak. We need more people to speak up and say these types of things because our communities and our families are dwelling off and we need to really uplift the family and uplift each other and value each other. So I appreciate everything you said — thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Also in her interview, Carmen revealed why she chose “Never Tear Us Apart” as her audition song. “A friend recommended that I sing it and when I listened to the lyrics I thought it described my husband and me, and how I felt about him.” Carmen will next be seen in the Judge Cuts round, where the acts who make it through will be allowed to perform in the live shows at the Dolby Theatre.
