“Terry Crews is a major improvement!” That’s how a whopping 76% of “America’s Got Talent” fans voted in our recent poll that asked how the new host of NBC’s reality TV show compares to Tyra Banks. This “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actor was such a success during his brief stint on this winter’s “AGT: The Champions” spinoff that producer Simon Cowell decided to hire him full time on the main series. Tyra had already announced her decision to leave after two seasons, a move that now upsets the other 24% of poll respondents.
So far Terry is absolutely crushing his gig as host of “America’s Got Talent,” delivering a wild sense of fun and super-fandom that feels right at home on the big stage. The show is close to finishing its wildly popular audition rounds, with the final one scheduled for Tuesday, July 9. That’s the episode in which we’ll finally see who Julianne Hough anoints as her Golden Buzzer act for Season 14.
Speaking of Golden Buzzers, Terry broke down in tears last month after watching Detroit Youth Choir perform Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ “Can’t Hold Us” during their audition. Terry watched from the sidelines in awe as the approximately 50 members of the youth group rapped, jumped and danced around the stage. “They did so well that I have to do this!” Terry proclaimed as he slammed his hand down on the Golden Buzzer.
In an interview with NBC, Terry explained his decision to send Detroit Youth Choir straight through to the live shows. “[It was] one of the best moments of my life,” he remembered. “They hit me with the pop rendition of one of my favorite songs of all time and then they rocked it. On top of all that, they’re from Detroit. You’re talking about kids who have seen so many painful, hard things in their life … It reminded me of me.”
Tyra hosted Seasons 12 and 13 of “AGT,” replacing long-time ringleader Nick Cannon, who served from Season 4 to Season 11. As longtime fans may recall, Regis Philbin hosted the inaugural season back in 2006. Reege only lasted one year, with Jerry Springer replacing him for Seasons 2 and 3.
