During the Season 14 premiere of “America’s Got Talent,” judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough met perhaps the biggest “Star Wars” fan of all time: Greg Morton. “I am so jazzed right now,” said the deep-voiced 60-year-old who used to work as a mobile disc jockey but now does voices in his spare time. “‘America’s Got Talent’ is my big break that I’ve been waiting for all my life.” Greg soon had all of the judges’ eyes popping out of their heads with his spot-on impressions of the “Star Wars” characters and iconic sounds. Watch the “AGT” audition video above.
Greg’s act began with the film’s classic opening tagline, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” He then did the trademark Darth Vader heavy breathing before bringing out his best James Earl Jones impersonation: “Join me, Luke. Join me on the dark side.” The judges gave their first “wow” faces when he mimicked perfectly the sounds of a light saber battle, and they were fully on board from that moment onward.
Some of Greg’s other “Star Wars” character impressions included Luke Skywalker, C3-PO, Admiral Ackbar, Jabba the Hutt, Yoda and even Chewbacca. “I’m in the movie!” shouted new host Terry Crews from the sidelines, as the audience laughed and applauded in their seats.
Greg broke down into tears after the crowd gave him a standing ovation. “I can’t believe we haven’t heard your name,” raved Howie. Gabrielle added, “It is your turn.” Julianne declared, “I would buy a ticket right now and I would go and see your show.” Simon concluded, “Every single person got the act, which means you’re in the right place.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “The first act of the season was 60 year old voice specialist and comic Greg Morton. His performance was a medley of ‘Star Wars’ voices/noises–everything from Darth Vader to the sound of spaceships zooming by and of course Chewbacca. When he got a standing ovation from the panel he became slightly emotional. Gabrielle gushed over him and Howie wondered why he hadn’t heard his name before because he should already be in Vegas with his own act. After Simon weighed in, all four judges gave Greg a YES, sending him on to the next round unanimously.”
