“America’s Got Talent” viewers everywhere were excited to see Shin Lim, the winner of Season 13 and “AGT: The Champions,” return to the Dolby Theatre during Wednesday’s live Quarterfinals 1 results show. The close-up magician, who currently entertains audiences at The Mirage in Las Vegas, performed his latest card trick for judges Simon Cowell, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union and Howie Mandel as well as special audience “spectator” Jay Leno. But there was a twist this time around as audience members at home could also perform the magic trick themselves. Watch the “AGT” video above.
“I’m gonna try an experiment with all of you,” Shin declared when he came out on stage. “In fact, that’s not just the audience over here, but everyone at home in America. So grab four cards — actually each and every one of you [in the crowd] should have four cards. And I’m gonna need a spectator for this. Actually, do you mind helping out, sir? Jay Leno! Come on, give him a hand.”
Jay pretended to be shocked at hearing his name called, which prompted Shin to laugh, “You don’t need to freak out, man.” Shin then instructed Jay, the judges, the audience and all of America shuffle the four cards and tear them in half. After more random shuffling he told everyone to put the top card into their pocket. As for the other cards, those were all traded with friends or thrown over people’s shoulders. It was a little confusing. “I don’t know, somehow I won ‘AGT,’ I’m not really sure,” Shin joked.
In the end, each person only had one-half of a card remaining, which matched exactly the half a card that was placed into their pockets at the beginning of the trick. It’s magic! Or is it? When the camera cut to the audience it didn’t appear as though everyone had succeeded in following Shin’s instructions properly. At the judges’ table only Julianne revealed that her two cards were a match. Luckily for Shin, his and Jay’s cards both synced up.
