It could be ladies’ night at the Grammys in 2020, at least in the pop categories. That’s according to the latest buzz from our forum posters, who are divided between several women as the top contenders for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Album, including Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
Eilish and Grande are the current front-runners for Album of the Year according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users as of this writing. Their respective albums, “When We All Fall Asleep, Were Do We Go?” and “Thank U, Next” have that magic combination of chart-topping commercial success and widespread critical acclaim, so if they’re the women to beat in the general field, it stands to reason that they’d be the top two contenders dueling for pop awards too.
But Gaga could also be a contender. She’s a threat to win Album of the Year for the soundtrack for “A Star is Born,” and she won Best Pop Solo last year for “Joanne,” a surprise victory since it was the title track from an album that had already come and gone. That could indicate just how passionate the recording academy is about her since “Star is Born.”
Meanwhile, Perry has racked up 13 nominations over the course of her career, but they’ve all been unlucky. She still hasn’t won a single Grammy yet despite past bids for Record of the Year (“Firework”), Song of the Year (“Roar”) and Album of the Year (“Teenage Dream”). She recently released a new single, “Never Really Over,” which peaked at number-15 on the Billboard Hot 100. She’s overdue, and she’s a powerhouse vocalist like past pop champs Kelly Clarkson and Adele, so voters may decide to make it up to her.

Miyake-Mugler: “Ariana was able to take down Taylor Swift due to [Swift] having a rather forgettable era. Don’t mistake Grande for being a Grammy darling. Eilish has all the right ingredients that voters adore. Billie will easily win 3 awards: Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.”
O’Hara: “Billie Eilish is taking Pop Vocal Album. Pop Solo is Ariana’s if she submits ‘Thank U, Next.'”
Bernardo Rojas: “Billie doesn’t sound like the typical winner in Pop Solo. And they won’t give Gaga the award again. ACCEPT IT.”
M: “If it were up to me, I would give Best Pop Solo to Katy Perry this year. She has three diamond singles and zero Grammys. Really unacceptable.”
Mcm: “Pop Vocal Album is between Ariana and Billie for sure. In my opinion I would give it to Billie in this one.”
