‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the 2nd biggest moneymaker of all time here and abroad, but it might not catch ‘Star Wars’ after all

In its fourth weekend in theaters, “Avengers: Endgame” took in another $29 million as “John Wick: Chapter 3” finally knocked the superhero blockbuster off its perch with its opening total of $57 million. But while “Endgame” is no longer the weekend champion, it has now risen to second place on the all-time charts as the biggest moneymaker of all-time, both domestically and internationally (not accounting for inflation). Are the all-time records still in reach? The answer is a definite … maybe.

Endgame‘s” weekend haul brings it to a massive domestic total of $770 million, which moves it just ahead of “Avatar” ($760 million) to claim second place at the all-time domestic box office. But it would need to rack up another $166 million in order to catch the current record-holder, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million). That won’t be quite so easy.

Despite an A+ CinemaScore, which indicated ideal audience response, “Endgame” has dropped more than 50% from weekend to weekend every week since its release. To have a fourth-weekend haul of $29 million less than a month after starting with a record-obliterating $357 million indicates that it might not have such long legs after all. Inching all the way to the “Force Awakens” total might be a tall order.

But what about worldwide? It ranks second there as well, and the all-time record is also in sight. It might actually be more attainable. It has accumulated $2.614 billion all over the globe, which is just $174 million shy of the all-time record held by the aforementioned “Avatar” ($2.788 billion). If the film still has more gas in the tank in overseas markets, it might be able to bridge that gap even if it falls short of the all-time domestic record.

Do you think “Avengers” will keep cashing in, or are the “Avatar” and “Star Wars” records safe?
