‘Big Little Lies’ episode 5 preview trailer: Bonnie is ‘drowning,’ while Mary Louise fights for Celeste’s kids [WATCH]

In HBO’s spoiler-filled preview trailer for the fifth episode of “Big Little Lies” Season 2 (watch above), Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) is told by the doctor that her comatose mother Elizabeth (Crystal Fox) saw a vision of her “drowning.” As you’ll recall, last week’s episode ended with Elizabeth being hospitalized after having a stroke at Renata’s (Laura Dern) daughter’s disco-themed birthday party. Elizabeth then had a psychic vision of Bonnie drowning, a metaphor for the fact that Bonnie is depressed after pushing Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) to his death last year.

Elsewhere in the promo, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) is still up to no good. She has taken Celeste (Nicole Kidman) to a meeting with the lawyers to try to gain custody of the twins. “We have to do what is best for the children,” Mary Louise tells her daughter-in-law after calling her “not well.”

And now that Madeline’s (Reese Witherspoon) affair has been revealed to Ed (Adam Scott), he finds himself at a crossroads: should he stay with her or leave her behind? “You left me with the difficult choice of all: to stay with a woman who I simply cannot trust,” Ed declares.

The preview trailer ends with that iconic shot of Celeste screaming over her husband’s dead body on the staircase outside the school. “They’d have to prove we were lying,” Madeline tells the other Monterey 5 in the present day. That’s when Bonnie coldly asks, “What if they can?” Cut to black.

Episode 5 of Season 2, titled “Kill Me,” airs Sunday, July 7 on HBO. The hour is directed by Andrea Arnold and written by David E. Kelley, based on a story by Kelley and book author Liane Moriarty.
