After a historic 19 weeks at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus has finally fallen from the top spot, and taking its place at the perch is an artist who has been waiting in the wings for months: Billie Eilish with “Bad Guy.”
Eilish spent nine non-consecutive weeks in the number-two spot with “Bad Guy,” which makes it the longest-running runner-up to finally ascend to number-one. Not only that, 17-year-old Eilish is the first artist born in the 21st century to rule the Hot 100. She’s also the youngest to top the chart since Lorde commanded the Hot 100 with “Royals” at age 16 in 2013, and “Bad Guy” is the first alternative song to hit number-one since “Royals” too.
“Bad Guy” has been flirting with chart supremacy for ages, and Eilish has been trying to give the song a boost, even recruiting Justin Bieber to record a remix duet of the song, but “Old Town Road” kept outpacing it. This week, however, she got just the push she needed by releasing a new vertical video for the song on YouTube and selling a cassette single on her website.
“Old Town Road” actually sinks to number-three this week as Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello‘s “Senorita” moves back up to the number-two spot, where it debuted back in June. So perhaps they’ll soon get a shot at the top spot too. If so it would be the first number-one hit of Mendes’s career after landing five songs in the top 10.
