Billie Eilish finally topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week after a long wait at number-two, and we think she’ll follow that on August 26 with her first ever Moonmen at the MTV Video Music Awards. As of this writing she’s the front-runner to win Best New Artist, and if she does she would join an impressive list of past champs that includes the Eurythmics, Nirvana, Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, Lady Gaga and Cardi B.
As of this writing Eilish gets leading odds of 31/10 based on the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have made their forecasts here in our predictions center. That includes support from the vast majority of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s VMA winners. Ranked second in our predictions with 4/1 odds is Lil Nas X even though his breakthrough hit “Old Town Road” spend a record-breaking 19 weeks at the top of the charts.
Eilish may be advantaged by the fact that since 2016 this award isn’t tied to any one specific video but rather to the artist’s work in general. While “Old Town Road” was an indomitable hit for months, Eilish has arguably has more overall success: 20 weeks after its release, her album “When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?” is still in the top five on the Billboard 200 albums chart. And she has had multiple videos in the last year that made an impact: “Bad Guy” is up for Video of the Year, while “Hostage” and “When the Party’s Over” were recognized in craft categories.
Overall, Eilish is predicted to win four VMAs out of her nine nominations. In addition to Best New Artist, she’s the odds-on favorite for Push Artist of the Year, Best Direction and Best Editing. Do you agree that she’s the woman to beat? How many awards do you think she’ll win?
