It’s official: Blake Shelton‘s “The Voice” Season 17 team is complete thanks to Matthew McQueen, a 21-year-old singer from Georgetown, Texas. After Matthew’s blind audition of Lewis Capaldi‘s “Someone You Loved,” John Legend described him as a cross between Tom Cruise and Christian Bale. “You’re like a very handsome movie villain,” John proclaimed. Despite the … compliment? … Matthew had a big decision to make as both Blake and Kelly Clarkson turned their chairs around. In the end, he chose to become the final member of Team Blake. Watch Matthew’s “The Voice” blind audition video above.
“I have coached the winner of this show six times,” Blake reminded Matthew when it was time to make his pitch. His previous winning artists were Jermaine Paul (Season 2), Cassadee Pope (Season 3), Danielle Bradbery (Season 4), Craig Wayne Boyd (Season 7), Sundance Head (Season 11) and Chloe Kohanski (Season 13).
Blake continued, “Only a handful of those have been country artists. It doesn’t matter what lane your coach is in, it’s what lane your coach could put you in. Come to Team Blake, come on, let’s do this!”
Kelly praised Matthew’s rasp as “cool and sexy” and told him she’d be the best coach since she’s been in his position before. “I know what it takes to strategize in a competition and I really feel like truly, I am a perfect coach for you,” she explained. In the end, Kelly’s pitch fell on deaf ears as Matthew decided to become the final member of Blake’s team.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Next to audition was Matthew McQueen, no relation to Steve McQueen, for his chance to fill Kelly, Blake or Gwen’s last spot. He took on Lewis Capaldi‘s current hit ‘Someone You Loved,’ and after almost an entire song with no turn suddenly Matthew had the choice to make between Kelly and Blake. Kelly waited because she wanted to see if he’d get nervous about no one turning and she liked that he didn’t. But in the end Matthew decided to join Team Blake based on a dream that his family members had previously had!”
