Carrie Underwood is closing in on Miranda Lambert’s record at CMA Awards

Carrie Underwood is the current front-runner to win Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2019 CMA Awards. If we’re right, it would be Underwood’s sixth victory in the category. That would put Underwood one step closer to the all-time record currently held by Miranda Lambert, who has prevailed seven times. But Lambert is nominated in this race too, so she could just as easily extend her record. Which way do you think this race will go?

Underwood won this prize three times in a row from 2006 to 2008, but it took her almost a decade to get back in the winner’s circle. She won for the fourth time in 2016 and for the fifth time last year in 2018. In the interim, Lambert took over, winning six times in a row from 2010 to 2015 and then again in 2017. But Lambert may not be as powerful in this contest as she once was.

Lambert is between albums, so she has no other nominations besides Female Vocalist of the Year. Meanwhile, Underwood is also up for Album of the Year for “Cry Pretty” and Entertainer of the Year. She’s actually the only woman nominated in the top category, which is impressive enough as it is since that award has shown a continued bias against female entertainers. So Underwood gets leading odds of 11/2 in the Female Vocalist contest based on the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have made their forecasts here in our predictions center.

Underwood is backed by 14 of the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s CMA winners and by 15 of the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest prediction scores when you combine the last two years’ CMA results. But Lambert isn’t Underwood’s biggest threat. That would be Maren Morris, who has never won this category before but who comes into these awards with the most nominations (six), including Album of the Year (“Girl”) and Single of the Year for the title track. She ranks a close second with 6/1 odds, while reigning Grammy champ Kacey Musgraves is third with 13/2 odds.

Lambert is an underdog this time around with 7/1 odds. Are we underestimating the woman who has dominated this category for the better part of a decade?
