How does Cecily Strong celebrate the Season 44 finale of another lengthy “Saturday Night Live season two weeks ago? In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she reveals, “I immediately get sick; it’s like clockwork. My body knows I can get sick and have that luxury to shut down. It feels like the end of a marathon.” That episode was hosted by regular guest Paul Rudd and will be the episode Strong submits to Emmy voters if nominated as Best Comedy Supporting Actress this summer.
One of her favorite recurring characters is Judge Jeanine Pirro, who she played on “Weekend Update” for that episode. How was she was first pitched the idea of playing the real-life and controversial reality host? She says, “(Writer) Bryan Tucker was showing me these clips. She does a man-on-the-street segment, which I tried a couple of years ago in a sketch format, and it would up getting cut for time. There’s something about the wild energy to her that was very fun, so it was great that we got to bring her back.”
Strong joined “SNL” as a featured player in 2012 before being moved into the regular company of players. Other famous characters she has played include Melania Trump, Sofia Vergara, Rachel Maddow, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Khloe Kardashian, Dianne Feinstein and Marion Cotillard. She also co-hosted “Weekend Update” with Colin Jost for one season before a decision to focus completely on sketch work.
In our chat, we also discuss her work with guest hosts such as Matt Damon, Jason Momoa, Emma Thompson and Chris Hemsworth. She also mentions that she is almost certain to return for the upcoming season 45 in the fall on NBC.
