Cynthia Hayashi just couldn’t get it together on “Project Runway All Stars.” A winner of the Brazilian version of the fashion series, she never distinguished herself to the judges in this country. She got a low score in the season premiere. And then she narrowly escaped elimination in “Of Corsets Fashion.” The panelists liked her well enough to advance her safely through the competition every other week, but she never once got a high score, so when she disappointed them again in “Penneys from Heaven,” it was clearly the last straw. Did she really deserve to be eliminated? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
This week’s challenge tasked the designers with taking three daytime separates from JCPenney and transforming them into one cohesive evening look. Hayashi was working with printed shorts and a blue cotton blouse that she turned into an outfit that didn’t look like evening-wear to the judges. Guest Vanessa Williams thought the vest Hayashi created was “frumpy,” while Georgina Chapman thought she would have been better off refining the outfit underneath and leaving the vest out entirely, especially since it ended up covering the one part of the design host Alyssa Milano liked: the intricate neckline of the top.
It ultimately came down to Hayashi and Australian “Runway” alum Christina Exie for elimination, but Exie has won a challenge this season, so perhaps that’s what swayed the judges to keep her in the competition over Hayashi, whose work never wowed them. Her exit means that Exie and Canada’s Evan Biddell are the only two contestants remaining who represent foreign “Runway” spin-offs. The other five represent the American “Runway” and “All Stars” shows. Did the judges make the right call?
