Ally Brooke is the second Fifth Harmony member to compete on “Dancing with the Stars,” following in the footsteps of Normani Kordei, but she hasn’t sought out any advice from her bandmate at the moment.
“I didn’t [ask her],” Brooke said during an interview with 97.1 AMP Radio (watch above), explaining that she wanted it between her family for now. “I kind of just kept it a surprise and kind of between my family and I. I know she’s going to be so proud of me.”
Kordei was one of the heavy favorites on Season 24 in spring 2017 with partner Val Chmerkovskiy, but the pair finished in third place. “Dancing” was keen to have another member of Fifth Harmony on the show and actually extended an invite to Brooke last year, she revealed. But she turned it down to focus on her solo career because she had just gotten signed (Fifth Harmony is currently on hiatus).
“They actually asked me last year, guys, but I said no at the time because it wasn’t the right timing,” she explained. “I was like, ‘Man, I’m so sad to say no, but you never know next year.’ They called me again, they contacted my management and they’re like, ‘Hey, we’d love to have Ally again.’ And then I said yes and I kind of made sure with my schedule and my team that it was good for me to go.”

Brooke, who’s currently in second place our early odds to win Season 28, is a self-professed superfan of “Dancing,” having grown up watching it with her mom, so she knew she couldn’t turn it down a second time. The singer is most looking forward to the outfits, but reiterated that she wants to use the opportunity to clapback at at the haters who have criticized her comparatively weaker dancing skills during her Fifth Harmony days.
“In the past, I was made fun of by so many people for my dancing, so that’s a big reason why I’m doing the show to kind of … I guess prove to them but also prove to myself that I can do it,” she said. “And I’m not going to run away from it because it’s something so personal.”
Brooke has already bonded with the cast — Hannah Brown, Lauren Alaina, Karamo Brown and Kel Mitchell are some of her new besties — and she has her eye on James Van Der Beek, who gave her a tease of what he’s bringing to the hardwood. “James has some dope moves,” Brooke shared. “He showed me some moves today … and I’m like, ‘OK, I’m watching you, boo.'”
