‘Dancing with the Stars’ elimination predictions: Will Kel Mitchell or Lauren Alaina fall short of the finals?

With Sean Spicer out of the way, “Dancing with the Stars” season 28 is finally down to the best dancers. But because this season has been so evenly matched, that means predicting who will be eliminated is harder than ever tonight. Which semifinalist — or semifinalists — will fall short of next week’s season finale?

As of this writing country singer Lauren Alaina is the likeliest to be eliminated, according to the combined predictions of “DWTS” fans. She gets leading odds of 13/8. Out of the final five, she has the lowest cumulative score from the judges (but not by much), so unless she pulls out all the stops during the semifinals, the judges might not save her if she ends up in the bottom two. And she landed in the bottom two for the very first time just last week when the judges predictably sent home Spicer instead. So she may be especially vulnerable.

However, her fans may know she’s vulnerable, so they may be more inclined to vote for her this time around. A country music fan base is a powerful weapon on “DWTS” — just ask Mirror Ball champions Kellie Pickler (season 16) and Bobby Bones (season 27). So if viewers do rescue Alaina from the bottom two, that could be bad news for comedian Kel Mitchell, who ranks second in our elimination predictions with 21/10 odds.

Mitchell only landed in the bottom two once — way back in week three — and his scores have steadily gone up as the season has progressed, but he’s still the second lowest scorer among the final five, so if he hits the bottom two and Alaina isn’t there to break his fall, he could be the one who gets the axe. Since it has been so long since the last time he was in jeopardy, his biggest risk is that his fans may be complacent, thinking it’s smooth sailing for him into the finals. But if this season has proved nothing else, it’s that fans should never take anything for granted.
