UPDATE (Aug. 14): The announcement will be on Wednesday, Aug. 21. More here.
The “Dancing with the Stars” Season 28 cast announcement — or some of it — is coming very, very soon. As in, as soon as next week.
Gold Derby can confirm that the first two celebrities were scheduled to be revealed on “Good Morning America” on Monday, Aug. 5, but the announcement was indefinitely postponed in light of the tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend. Host Tom Bergeron confirmed as such on Twitter last Monday.
I assume given coverage of the domestic terrorist shootings in Texas & Ohio @GMA wisely opted to delay it

While the announcement has yet to be officially rescheduled, Bergeron did narrow the timeframe a bit on Friday. Responding to a fan on Twitter, the Emmy winner teased that the reveal is “not next week. But not too much beyond next week,” with a winking emoji.

That means we can all sleep soundly this week, Aug. 12-16. But starting Monday, Aug. 19, all bets are off.
The announcement coming toward the end of August tracks with the show’s past fall season reveals, and the initial one usually divulges the pros for the season, which could also be the case this time. Sometimes one or two stars are announced early, but the full cast of celebs and partners is usually unveiled in early September. Saving the stars for last is not just to keep fans on their toes (no pun intended), but because sometimes contract negotiations come down to the wire, and there have been a few instances of stars withdrawing at the last minute for whatever reason.
Here’s how the past four fall season cast reveals have gone down.
Season 21 (2015): nine pros on Aug. 19; first celeb Bindi Irwin on Aug. 24 with some other celebs revealed on social media throughout week; full cast on Sept. 2
Season 23 (2016): eight pros on Aug. 23 with more pros announced throughout the week; full cast on Aug. 30
Season 25 (2017): pros on Aug. 24 with Cheryl Burke announced on Sept. 4; first celeb Drew Scott on Aug. 30; full cast on Sept. 6
Season 27 (2018): pros on Aug. 28; first celeb Nancy McKeon on Sept. 5; full cast on Sept. 12
If “DWTS” sticks to this pattern, we’ll get the pro dancers next week with maybe a celeb or two tossed in (probably the two who were supposed to be announced last week), and then the full cast will come in September. But with the unexpected postponement and the show gearing up for a big return after a divisive 27th season and getting sidelined in the spring, don’t be surprised if ABC goes all in and reveals the entire cast — which, if everything goes as planned, will have some big names — next week to drum up buzz.
“Dancing with the Stars” premieres Monday, Sept. 16 at 8/7c on ABC.
