On Friday, the “Dancing” host sent in a video to “Good Morning America,” where his longtime pal William Shatner was promoting his new History series “The UnXplained,” to make a hilarious, only slightly desperate plea.
“Hey Bill, Tom here. So you’re at ‘Good Morning America.’ I’m going to be at ‘Good Morning America’ soon to unveil the new cast of ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ And if you just stick around at ‘Good Morning America,’ maybe we could add your name to the list. You know you want to. C’mon, buddy,” Bergeron said, closing with a sad frown-y face.
How can Captain Kirk say no, right? Well, he has before, and he did again. “For years they’ve been wanting [me to go on], and I thought, ‘You know, you can make an idiot of yourself anywhere, but on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ you’re more likely to make an idiot of yourself,'” Shatner quipped.
The actor, who’s a sprightly 88 years old, explained that he has considered doing “Dancing” in the past, but one of his favorite pastimes has ruled it out. “I ride a lot of horses,” he explained. “I’m still competing on horseback. And your back slowly goes. And the back controls the legs. I think my dancing years are over, but if Tom would carry me around, I mean, maybe.”
Do it, Tom. We’ll have our first male-male partnership on the show.
The Season 28 cast announcement is expected sometime next week. “Not next week. But not too much beyond next week,” Bergeron tweeted on Friday, referring to the week of Aug. 12.
“Dancing with the Stars” returns Monday, Sept. 16 at 8/7c on ABC.
