Daytime Emmy for Best Younger Actor is the only race guaranteed to crown a new champ: Lucas Adams, Garren Stitt or …?

There are seven acting categories for TV dramas at the Daytime Emmys, and when you look at the pre-nominations they could all go to a past Emmy champ … except for one. Best Younger Actor is the only field this year where every single contender would be a first-time winner. Most of them would even be first-time nominees. So who will win this wide-open contest?

Last year’s winner, Rome Flynn (“The Bold and the Beautiful”), left his show in 2017, so he’s out (and even if he were still on “B&B” he would have aged out of the Younger Actor field, whose cutoff is 26). Also absent from the list is the actor we thought would win last year, Casey Moss (“Days of Our Lives”), even though he is still on the show and still of age. Ditto child actor Hudson West (“General Hospital”), who isn’t on the pre-nominations list either despite still being featured on his series.

That leaves two holdovers from 2018: Lucas Adams (“Days”) and Tristan Lake Leabu (“The Young and the Restless”). Are they the front-runners by default this year? The category does often favor past nominees. Only twice in the last 10 years has this prize gone to a first-timer: Drew Tyler Bell for “B&B” (2010) and the aforementioned Rome Flynn, but Flynn’s year was a rare occasion when the category was filled top to bottom with first-time nominees.

As of this writing Adams is indeed the favorite to win; according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users, he gets leading odds of 69/20. “GH” actor Garren Stitt is pre-nominated for the second year and ranks second in our predictions with 4/1 odds. Leabu sits in third place with 9/2 odds. Do you agree with those odds, or are we in for a surprise when Emmy nominations are announced on March 20?
